Of an elite café opposite children’s park,
My eyes fell on the well-patched frock of
A skinny young girl aged four, or may be five,
With a running nose, that made her look all the more innocent!
She held a basket in one of her hands, and was too busy
Counting the roses in them!
One...
Two...
Three...
Four...
Five...
Having sipped the last drop of coffee
From what looked like an expensive cup,
I stepped out of the café when she looked at me
With hungry eyes and asked me to buy one of the roses.
~Indian Rupees Five for a Rose~

I looked at the array of a dozen crimson roses,
And they did not look fresh at all.
I did not complain.
Instead, I handed over my wallet to her saying, ‘Keep it in exchange
For your basket of roses!’
The girl obeyed as if it was a command.
The next day, my eyes fell on the young girl again
As I sipped coffee in the same cafe (close by my office)
During the break!
She held a basket in one of her hands, and was too busy
Sniffing the roses in them!
Having sipped the last drop of coffee from my cup
I stepped out of the café when she looked at me
With a spark of contentment in her eyes, and said,
‘The roses in this new basket are fresh!’
I was just about to pick out my new wallet
From the same old pocket, when she finally announced,
“These roses are not for sale!
I have arranged them for you as a note of thanks.
Please accept them; O angel of mercy!”
I obeyed as if it was a command.
