Just to See You Smile

I would do anything just to see you smile
and you knew that, so you smiled easily
I was your loving clown
The little want to be actor doing tricks
to get your attention

I would give you those big brown puppy eyes
every time I wanted something,
Primarily to make love
because loving you was good .

Sometimes I could act like the little boy
and stick my lip out

I always got my way.

I stood there and acted the clown

I danced the funky chicken

I walked outside
tears welling in my eyes.

your soul smiled
At my false cheeriness
because you know
that I tried.
You always made things
easy for me with your smile.

and you knew
that I loved you to.
Now I am driving down the road years later
Once in a while that song
“Just To see you smile” comes on
and the vision of you is so clear
I swear I can reach out and feel you

Just at that final line
I would do anything
Brings back the memory
of lips parting like petals opening.

Somewhere I feel you looking down on me.
Somehow it makes everything okay.
