An Ancient Coat
©copyright 2009 Bonita M Quesinberry
Today, it would be thought a worn, old coat;
yet it had been lovingly stitched of many colours,
though not for the sons whose eyes gleamed with motes
and jealousy for the brother of father's old age.
Alas, one day he would be their scapegoat.
Oh, in that coat the son gained strange visions:
grandeur to him and obeisance of all his fam'ly
scored Dad's rebuke and brothers' decisions.
They would sell that son of old age but hold tight his coat,
bloodied to cover up their derision.
Many days the father grieved; then years passed,
the brothers safe from their wicked deed still uncovered.
Famine came, as the son envisioned last,
thus Jacob sent ten sons to purchase food of Pharaoh.
They knew not Joseph as they bowed to caste.
Yes, the fam'ly was restored in the end:
Joseph, so forgiving, understood his destiny.
An old, worn coat might have lessons to lend,
so think not about garbage; it might serve others, too:
a coat of colours stitched well for life's bends.

The best version is the Authorized King James Version Bible; for it was the first translation to fulfill a part of Revelation's prophecies. If you call upon the Holy Spirit to teach you, He can make it easy to read and understand.
Much luv & hugs, BonnieQ

Wonderful!
A wonderful retelling of a favorite Bible story in which a favored coat held much prominence. Your abreviated telling of the story hit the high(and low) points but ended with a reunion with gracious Joseph forgiving his brothers. Well Done!

Thank you so much, dearest brother, for the encouragement! Indeed, we learn a lot from Joseph's story; not just about forgiveness but the understanding of how ALL things work to the good of those who love the Lord. I've been through many of these things, absent the coat of many colours
of course; and, in the end of each, came to understand the reason for the course that led to my destiny on God's behalf.
Tons of luv & hugs, SisBon

Thank you, Kath! Joseph always serves as a reminder when life in these end days is harder than usual; the destiny is up ahead thus one must persevere.

Oh, wonderfully thought and written!
Amazing take on the prompt that warms my heart, for I love the scriptures and find the stories so inspiring.
My favorite story is David and Goliath.
We should give daily thought to God's word through his prophets and act accordingly.

Thank you for sharing this profoundly beautiful poem.

Oh, thank you so much, Melodies, for the kind words and acceptance of this poem into your great contest. Your judging will be difficult, for there are so many great poets; especially among the Bandits.

Yes, judging will be very very very very difficult on this one!
I shall go insane from it and fall on my bed in a heap.
