Pastor Brown

Pastor Brown
almost brought the Church down
when he stood before the bema
preaching The Word with quite a fervor

Old worn coat that was threadbare
didn’t give him any care
He dedicated all his money
to Father’s work, it spread like honey

One week the Pastor took very ill
wilted flower seen on the window sill
Widow Mildred came to call on him
brought him soup and a bottle of gin

The Pastor gave a feeble grin
when he let the widow in
She served his soup and gave the scoop
of all the Congregation’s poop

She poured the gin in a dainty tea cup
Pastor Brown passed it up
Mildred sat there like a lady
sipping on her gin at midday

Pastor Brown passed away
with latest news of the day
and a cherished bowl of soup
to strengthen him to bear the scoop

The Congregation it seems
was looking for a brighter dream
A younger man to fit the bill
Pastor Brown had grown too ill

When he learned of the younger
man to take his commission over
there was a light that left his eye
that once had beamed in days gone by

Now that Pastor’s coat is there
in the library where he prepared
his Sermons given with much zest
in retrospect he passed his test

Author notes

Mr 10:23 And Yahshua looked round about, and saith unto his disciples, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of YAH!
Mt 6:19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:
20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:
Lu 12:33 Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth.

Awesome write yet again, kathie, but what is a 'bema'? I feel kinda silly not knowing...lol. Thanks for the lovely story-like share! Keep up the great work!

    • LOL....

I was waiting for someone to ask me that! It's the platform [podium] that the Minister preaches from! This was a pix prompt & I'm surprised how I was inspired. I've only written a few pieces in story form & this did come out well. I've been meaning to see who won trophies. Thanks for your read & comment.

    Wonderful !

What an amazing story poem full of life and detail. You have captured scenes of life that may for some go unnoticed, when leaders past their prime fade into the background and make way for their replacements. This was a heartwarming tale of a person that had inspired so many was in the waning days of a fruitful life. Thanks for sharing this thoughtful poem my friend.

    • It surprised me!

This is the second story poem I was inspired to write. If I get a good prompt that's all I need to get started & then Father did the rest! Glad you liked this. I had fun 'receiving' it.

Ah, wonderfully written with a profoundly fine message...

Aye, we might think well before we break a fellow man's heart. I am so pleased with this poem, for it tells a story to contemplate and appreciate, and is beautifully penned.

    • When I saw the pix

[that I notice disappeared from the Contest page] I knew I was going to be inspired to write & was surprised at what I received! Story poems are not ones I'm familiar with, but He inspired me with this & I could 'see' this is my mind's eye & as I 'heard' I scribed. This pretty much flowed out of me & was a surprise when I finished it & read it! I'm a scribe, an inspired writer, and when I saw that old coat on the hanger in what appeared to me to be a library I immediately saw Pastor Brown! Thanks for your acknowledgment of His gift to me to share with all. I'm happy that you found this pleasing!
