the Comfort of Seams

While going through a stack of coats one day.
Well I was at a rummage sale one day.
I came across this coat, it had been rolled up in a ball.
It was in a bag, like it fell of of the table.
One whiff, well no offence to the poor coat.

The main color, from the stains and the patches ?
Well maybe it was plaid - I think.
You see seams were the main thing about it.
Some places it had been taken in, others let out
Where let out a different print was added.

Maybe someone had lost an arm so there was this make-shift hat.
The was smart, it buttoned around the neck.
Speaking of buttons they were all different in color and size.
Silver , Gold (with an eagle on it)Red and Black ( with an anchor) buttons.
Some button holes made larger to fit the button.

Well this coat had eaten some in it's life time.
Soups of all kind a little catsup, and mustard, the smell of spirits still there.
There was hair, ( people and animal), grass, and straw just about every where the coat had been.
The coat was heavy,  i guess this meant it still had good mileage in it.
One lady said "Here I"ll take that for my dog to sleep on an off went the coat.

I think that was the most interesting coat I ever saw.
A voice said "That coat sure was warm.
I nodded, and agreed as the coat left.
Joe's brother had it when it was almost new, I think that was, well never mind he is gone now.
"I wore it one winter too." said the voice

Old well worn things almost gain a life of thier own. We throw away things too easily today in this disposable society.

I like this poem very much because it is wonderfully descriptive and has such realism and poignancy built into it in lovely ways. I can see the coat in my mind and it is really remarkable, like your poem!

What an amazing poem this is. I am astonished at the way the story turns, as it seems that the coat was haunted. Very clever and well written... images that take the reader right to the scene.
