Azure Braces

One day, my love, while you are hanging linen,
look over to the barn and see me there
unbailin' with the pitchfork and a grinnin',
'cause when I see your smile I'll know you care.
One day, my love, the cattle shall be ready,
the corn shall grow up to the summer sky.
The temperature will suit us and stay steady,
the harvest moon will join us by and by.
One day, my love, I'll don my blue suspenders,
then you, high-heeled, and I will hit the dance.
That night we'll be the biggest jukebox spenders
and celebrate with songs of sweet romance.
Then I will ask you from my bended knee;
One day, my love, would you share all with me?

Author notes

I just took the prompt a pair of blue suspenders and wrote whatever came to mind.

This is what I call a Jethro Bodine Sonnet.

What a great proposal! I really enjoyed reading this from top to bottom (especially liked the line, "We'll be the jukebox spenders"). You gave me a fantastic little story here. Thank you.

    Love, Lane

Well done; Jethro would be proud. I rather enjoyed the story line but was thrown somewhat at the end. I had assumed through most of the poem that these folks were long-time married, living a simple life and looking forward to a special romantic occasion away from the drudgeries of life. The idea that they were living this life and not yet married is a disconnect for me. Your words invoke great imagery though. Thanks!

When one looks at things all face value, I suppose that is what it would look like. I was hoping something even deeper and more meaningful was embedded here. They may well be married, they may just be friends, they may be lovers, I don't really know. All I know is that she is holding out on him and he wants her to share everything. To me, that is a very meaningful thing. More meaningful than a marriage proposal. Marriage is a contract, this is a very organic compassionate expression of empathy.
