How can I describe to you
the loveliness of a tillandsia
in full blush, about to bloom?
I collect them as a hobby;
through trial and error I
have 7 out of 12 remaining -
Just having bought two red
beauties: a brachycaulos green
in flushing red - what a beauty!
To simplify things, I've named
her Andromeda, and nestled her
in my hoya by my desk...
I can't wait for her to bloom.
There's also the less spectacular
Iontha Rubra or Mexican Red -
A tiny little fireball I call Ruby.
But not to forget my amethyst
Aeranthos, Ming Toy, which sits
In my hoya's pot as well, next to
Andromeda; at first I was taken
with Ming Toy, but Andromeda -
She's beautiful, like a maiden about
to achieve womanhood, the colors
are SO fantastic and brilliant.
Yet not everybody is a botanist at
heart; not everybody understands...
My father does, collecting orchids,
Raising them here in the state of
Washington - that a trick in itself.
And my mother, well, she smiles,
Having lived with my father for about
30 years, knowing his passion for orchids,
she tolerates my growing passion as well.
I dragged that poor woman, recovering
from a kidney infection as she was,
through an indoor nursery to buy my beauties;
She urged me on, to go and look at
what new shipment had arrived of
tillandsias because she knows I love them;
She feels she doesn't see me happy enough
in life, so she sacrificed her time to rest
after being so ill before returning at work.
So I wonder: which is the greater beauty: my
lovely Andromeda, about to bloom, or my mother
who's love is self-sacrificing for her daughter's happiness?

Author notes
You can't see in the pic very well, but the brachycaulos green in blush is half brillant red, half green - green at the bottom.

WOW. It’s so beautiful. The picture says it all. The plant is a real beauty. No wonder I loved it and took inspiration from the same to pen something brilliant. That’s really cool. Thanks for entering.

I really loved this piece, and how the plants were described as beauties and people. It really gave the emotional touch, and the ending was beautiful, I loved it. The whole poem was filled with imagery and poetic devices, and it's an amazing poem.
One suggestion I would make, though, is to vary the words in the third stanza; the repetition of the words "beauty" and "red" threw me a little. Perhaps you could rewrite it as something similar to this:
Just having bought two scarlet
miracles: a brachycaulos green
in flushing red - what a beauty!
I wish you the best of luck, and keep writing and improving your poetry. ^__^

I love this penning... I reminded me of a few poems, movies, and plays I've read.
""So I wonder: which is the greater beauty: my
lovely Andromeda, about to bloom, or my mother
who's love is self-sacrificing for her daughter's happiness?""
I really enjoyed this stanza.. the imagery and emotion just jump out at me.. well done poet!! -
