eyes and tell me
does it smell like home--
of mud and blood and
dark recesses,
of dust and stars and bone?
Is it raw and
dangerous?
Like trying your wings
in a blizzard;
harsh and sharp,
beautiful, it sings;
with purity
it strikes a chord
with shadows, and with light;
innocence captured,
poignant and stark--
humanity's delight.
Author notes
This was a hard one. Every time I really got into writing the emotions the photos stirred, it sounded...wrong, looking back at the pictures.
Sally Mann's art provokes in me memories of being innocent--not ignorant of pain, but convinced that I would survive, no matter what. But trying to describe it in adult terms...and connected with the photographs themselves...was difficult.
Thanks for presenting a challenge, and introducing me to this amazing artist.

I've come to really like this. I was wondering if you would take a look at it and consider possibly ending it at:
poignant and stark. ?
I am especially sweet on opening wings in a blizzard
and the sounds in this section:
does it smell like home--
of mud and blood and
dark recesses,
of dust and stars and bone?
Thanks. I appreciate your having a go with the photo.

Couldn't end it there, was following a rhyme scheme. Thanks for hosting, this was a great contest, and I wish you'd had a better turnout for it.
