Inside I am selfish
Inside I am careless
I am in the dark
And inside the dark
I am not the living light that people were fooled into thinking
The glowing peace that I fooled myself into thinking
In truth I am nothing
In words I am vile
I never cry
Not from the heart
I never care
Not from the soul
And it is inside the piece of coal my heart was
The hope of becoming more
The hope of becoming selfless
Of being careful
Being the light
That my comrades look and be warmed by
When they crawl out of the shadows
And into my embrace
My caring embrace
But all I am is the same
Inside we are all the same
We are nothing but pretenders
So skilled in pretending that we think it real
There we believe there is no intended darkness
Either way choices seem selfish
Every choice surrounds ourselves
There is no escaping
The shadows that pull humanity inwards
But it is all natural
We cannot deny
That inside we are monsters
Inside we are deceptive beasts
Inside we are humans
The pure definition of humans
And forever will we be pieces of chocolate covered coal
Pretending forever
Trying forever
To be the one
To find the one
That doesn't exist.
Inside I am careless
I am in the dark
And inside the dark
I am not the living light that people were fooled into thinking

Author notes
Just something I started hurting my head thinking about.
No matter how selfless you try to be, it all leads back to you caring for your own self.
When your friend is hurt, you want to help them, because it hurts you as well to see them this way. That would be considered selfish--but with benefits for the other side.
Feel free to disagree and enlighten me. :3

This is a great take on human nature, I agree that even the most selfless person can always be considered selfish in some perspective. Thank you for sharing and letting me see in your head a bit =). Thank you for entering and good luck in the contest.
