How strange our weather can become.
Last week we had bushfires and heat
which made us all feel very glum
as lives were lost. We faced defeat.
Our fighting spirit came alive -
we fought to gain control and won
to show the world how we can strive
to reunite and be as one.
And now, this week, it’s wet and cold
in Sydney. That’s a big relief
for us, heat will be back we’re told,
so we enjoy this respite brief.
No rain to help down south at all.
Just not enough to put them out.
As fires still burn more towns could fall
And, on the, news they’ve caught the lout.
He lit the fire in his home town
that murdered twenty one poor souls.
If folks could, they would hunt him down
and lynch him - but for law’s controls.
Our Queensland state has had its share
with widespread floods from too much rain.
They need our help to show we care
until their land dries out again.
One child was taken by a croc.
He had no chance to get away.
Just five years old; his folks in shock.
Their Son has gone - they kneel and pray.
Although the weather has been bad
We live with it. This is our land
that we all love, so don’t be sad
because we love it here - it’s grand!
When Winter comes it will be nice
to have a break from all the heats
and snuggle up, when it’s like ice,
with loved ones in between the sheets.
So winter hurry up and come
as that’s the season I like best
and, even though it’s not for some,
it’s when I feel that I can rest.
I hope this doesn’t make you blue
for everything I write is true..

Author notes
The top part of Australia is under water down as far a New South Wales while in Victoria there are fires, it's like half of Australia is drowning and the other part burning..weird weather.

I had not heard that the fire starter had been caught. I’ll have to check that out. Your poem is moving. The flow and rhyme work well. Good luck in the contest.

Dear Jen, Heath and I have been watching the fires on the news, such tragedy to occur in our country, up north have floods and down South have these devastating fires and you and AJ in the middle. My heart goes out to all the people who lost their lives and for the ones who survived but lost loved ones, relatives, friends and neighbours and all the animals who never survived. I heard there are still fires burning and no rain yet. Good luck in the voting.

There are times when all goes crazy and nature isn't an exception. How sad and tragic has this Australian Summer been, and you showed it here very well. I can only imagine how Winter will be a blessing for you guys.
You be safe and I hope that all gets to normal there very soon

Wouldn't it be nice if we could even things out with Mother Nature...but in the meantime we will all survive and look for war to the next new season and enjoy or tolerate what ever it brings us...

Such tragic things are happening in Australia, with the fires and flooding, and now the little boy taken by a crocodile. My heart is deeply saddened by what's happening and the sorrow of those families left behind.
Your poem, filled with unhappy times is tempered by the beauty yet to come and your love of country.
Good luck in the contest

Sure could use a little good news today!
Very sorry to hear about the devastating fires In Victoria and the floods in the top part of Australia. I wish they still punished criminals (like the arsonist responsible for the terrible fires) by putting them in the town square where citizens could throw rotten tomatoes, etc. at them and tell them how much harm they have caused by their hateful actions. After a month of public humiliation, then they could be paraded through the streets of the town wearing chains as people scream at them. They should be allowed only enough rations to keep them alive and then they should be whipped (one lash for each victim). Finally, they should be imprisoned for the rest of their lives in solitary confinement (because they don't deserve to be in the company of fellow human beings for whom they have so little regard).
I believe that everything you have written is true..such sad news does make me blue.
May tomorrow bring a brighter day!
For this and more, I sincerely pray.
Hugs,
<3 Maureen

Dear Maureen, I didn't mean to make you blue, it's just my way of expressing how I feel about what's happening in our country, we in New South Wales are between floods and fire, the part of our state under water is near the floods in Queensland and in the center of OZ we have drought where the poor farmers are losing everything and our Government pledges aid in other countries when our country is in need of desperate help, such a strange situation the weather is.So, I'm so sorry if my poem upset you.

Dear Jen, and as you know there are fires still raging in Victoria with more bodies being found, the count now being about 213. And here we are stuck in the middle of floods and fire..Unreal. Great poem and good luck in the voting.

Dear Jen,
Your poem describes most graphically,
Australia's double tragedy
with bush-fires raging out of hand
while flooding devastates the land.
Victorian towns incinerated
while Queensland is part-inundated
with yet uncounted loss of life,
homes quite destroyed and looting rife.
I think the plundering element
forthwith to gallows should be sent
while those who set the fires awake
be lynched or roasted at the stake.
Their crime is murder - not manslaughter.
and High Court Judges really oughter,
when sentencing's deliberated,
regard those crimes premeditated.
Tonight, on news, the floods were seen
and New South Wales is right between
the Queensland flooding on one hand
and bush-fires in Victoria land.
We learn with horror next, and shock
of that boy taken by a croc....
It causes one to catch one's breath
to contemplate such awful death.
Applause for a splendid account of the calamities in your neighbouring States and your own positive affection for your country, nevertheless.
Applause, Good luck in the voting and love and hugs XXX Hugh (R,)

It is odd that one part of Australia is bone dry, and the other is soaked. We can't order what we want, but live with what we get. I hope that as time goes on things will get evened out.
I was saddened by the loss of life in the fires, and it stands to reason that the crocs will hunt wherever there is water. Very tragic for the families.
Your motto to be happy is a contrast; but so it is, there is more life after today.
Best of luck!

Yes, from afar we watch this land of opposites,
the fires, the floods, the human loss.
You have told the tale so painfully well
while celebrating your love of country.
News in poetic form---well done, Jen.

No, not blue but the croc story is sad. I've been watching the fires on the news, sad stuff there. Hopefully they get some rain in that area. At least it's cool in your neck of the woods, that is good, even if the heat is returning. I hate hot weather worse than the cold.
I hope the fires stop soon.
