The Namesake

Gogol...
what is in a name?
A boy named after an author
who became an architect.
Trapped between two backgrounds.

Stuck with a silly name
until he understands the story,
the story of his name.
It all started with an old overcoat.

Thanks for this. If I hadn't happened by your write I'd have never known about this genius. I was perplexed, looked up his name on answers.com & finally found the reference to The Overcoat! Now I'm so intrigued I want to read it! C what you've done? Bravo! Very clever write friend.

CLEVERNESS! I like tying in historical stories into poetry. I wish school English classes would work with history classes and read and write poems with historical/biographical themes. Well done, good poet!

The naming of names is an odd business and so often ruled by passing fads. This is a sensitive touch on a unique name. For me - not being what you call literary - I can't make the connection but I rather liked the journey.
