Lanterns and Lullabies

Listfully listening
to languishing lullabies,
that cradle the night,
just before the coming of dawn.

The merry and the song
have gone,
beyond the
billowing clouds
of smoke
that exhume
the confused child
we never knew.

Away from the night
we move,
forsaking our lanterns
and rising
into the very light
that brings pain
and joy,
for all to see
and feel,
when there's
nowhere to hide.

The sun song drives the dark away.

The penetrating rays
keep us on bended knee.
Sheltering our eyes
in our hands,
hovering
and covering ourselves
beneath our own shadow,
till the night is held again.

Listfully listening
to languishing lullabies,
that cradle the night,
just before the coming of dawn.

    brilliant

    this is the best part:
    Away from the night
    we move,
    forsaking our lanterns
    and rising
    into the very light
    that brings pain
    and joy,
    for all to see
    and feel,
    when there's
    nowhere to hide

    its so clever and imaginative!
you are a talented writer my friend
    keep it up

    Wonderfully Penned

I adore the title of this work I felt compelled to read being drawn to this particular piece. I like your writing style…after reading a few of your things I wanted so much to comment on this particular piece. I love your use of alliteration throughout this piece there is a certain cadence from beginning to end that gifts a fair lull of its own...a very enjoyable read.

I find this is a very intriguing work where your expression holds so many variables. I am going to read this a few more times for each time I find it evokes a different experience. I love a writer with artist flair where your colours are penned to perfection; you are an enigma one I will adore to explore my heartfelt thank you for gifting me a quiet moment, wonderfully penned piece.

    So beautiful

Amazing this is so beautiful your work is so awesome I love it.

  • Listfully listening
    to languishing lullabies,
    that cradle the night,
just before the coming of dawn.

Those lines are amazing and really draw you into the poem.. cradling the night.. makes me think of a child..being cradled.. very interesting thoughts here. It reminds me of maybe vampires but definately something that exists in shadow.. maybe shadow itself.

  • o god how i wish I could write as well as you, your words like water, refreshing, calming, and powerful. Bravo!

  • Very good poem

well, i honestly have no idea what this poem is about. i like it. i have no critisizim to offer. but i have no idea what its about.

  • This was an excellant poem. I thought the imagery was excellent. "Listfully listening
    to languishing lullabies,
    that cradle the night,
just before the coming of dawn. " That was a very very very good ending. Well done!

    "The penetrating rays
keep us on bended knee." You leave me open and bleeding once again. Bravo!

  • Your power with words is exceptional.

    With the wonderful title.

The repeated allteration all conspire to draw one in, then you cannot stop but read this masterpiece again again again.

We must have all been that lost soul at some mysterious point in our lives, maybe some of us are still.
Loved this supreme tale with it fine imagery and beautiful use of the English tongue.

    Amazing.

I love the repitition of the first and last stanza. You seem very wise but at the same time very young at heart. I enjoyed this poem very much. Once again your style of writing is incedible.

  • Wow!!!!!

Filled with imagery & metaphor for life & man's journey in life. Like the comparison of dark & light in this & the allusion you make to 'coming into the light on bended knee'! You paint a picture filled with room for the reader to find their solution to the puzzle you present. Well done again friend Liam.

  • BEAUTIFUL BUT SAD

For within the night a freedom is given yet the ghosts of the past sing there lullabies and the shadows from mornings light cover the heart as protection, until once again life can be faced...My brother of my heart i send you much love

  • Like I said earlier, I haven't been on to look at new poems lately, and in all truthfulness, I believe a look at your new work is just what I needed

what attracted me most to read this piece was not just the fact that it's your latest, but the title. What a compelling entitlement... Lanterns and Lullabies... it drew me right in and I certainly wasn't disappointed.
Such a mysterious piece. I especially loved the opening stanza, I agree with CrystalLizard about the alliteration "Listfully listening
to languishing lullabies," such a picture. And it makes a beautiful sound. I can sense a very poignant meaning behind this piece from the style of language and the emotions expressed, "billowing clouds
    of smoke
    that exhume
    the confused child
    we never knew."

    and "Sheltering our eyes
    in our hands,
    hovering
    and covering ourselves
beneath our own shadow," but I'm going to have to (pleasurefully) read this again before I make my own interpretation of what that meaning could be.
What I like about this, is that even though it is not 'obvious', or too revealing, it still manages to take you on a journey and come out thinking about it.
If you are not an artist with paints, you are an artist with words that paint their own pictures. Believe me, the pictures in people's heads are more vivid.

You are, as always, a master and I think everybody who has seen this piece will agree with me.

    Bravo!!

Nice "L" alliteration—very soft and soothing. I like the lines "the sun song drives the dark away" and the image of "covering ourselves / beneath our own shadow." Nice image, too, of squinting into the sun. And I like how the poem wraps around itself in the beginning and end, like a cradle. Nicely done!

The sun song drives the dark away.

I love this line. It is really touching, somehow i feel so dark, you know it seems that the world has reached its end that dying is something inescapable...

    che.. enough of that.

A wonderful write from a wonderful poet is enough to make my day, though it is already night in here...

I love the verses very much, somehow enlightening, not in the spiritual sense though, but in my current emotional state, it helps me a lot!!!!

Thanks again, and please keep on writing such wonderful poems!!!

    Another great poem

This one is lyrical, a bit like a song. It would be good read out loud or even sung along with some appropriate musical accompaniament. Well done my friend I like it. I especially like the last bit with all the Ls " Listfully listening to languishing lullabies". Top notch stuff as usual.

    very cool.

I like the alliteration right off the bat...That's cool, and it actually doesn't seem forced, it flows very well.

Everyone puts up walls, or hides in shadows. Everyone...In their own way. The imagery was again amazing...Favorite was..
    "The penetrating rays
    keep us on bended knee.
    Sheltering our eyes
    in our hands,
    hovering
    and covering ourselves
    beneath our own shadow,
till the night is held again."
I love how you can really see what you're describing in your poetry...It's very cool...

The silence between the going of the crickets and the coming of the birds has a depth many cannot understand.
Have we truly never known the child, or do we refuse to remember?
We move into the exposing light but, do we truly need to banish the dark? Of course not, we hold dear the shadows in which we hide until the light again fades.
    Excellent write my Brother,
    Michael

You post a lot more these days. That's really great. I liked the title for this. It sounded good. And your poem always has that forward feel that all your poems have. I do have to say that I wasn't as fond of all the 'L' words you had in the first stanza. I found it distracted me more than anything. Also this one sounds like you were distracted again. It just didn't sound as tight as a lot of yours do. Not that it's bad or anything though, so don't take it that way!
