My Lover, The Lemondrop Kid (For my Husband, with every bit of love I have, and everything else)

maybe if we put together
all the lemon drops,
and all the good songs,
and poems, books, and films
vinyls
in the world
something would be able to
something would matter.

you’re right
that nothing really changes
the world.
that truth doesn’t really matter,
on a world-scale.
But so many things
have been great
and exciting...
Even radio-men,
have shook up the world.

there’s been death
and life
and riots and art
and music and advances and depressions
and recessions and
the Pax Romana and
Petey Greene’s Washington
and Socrates
and cigarettes and alcohol
and the beat scene.
protests and famous pool games,
influential dames, men who gave
world permission for people to speak
in candor and without
restraint.
there have been heartbreaking
assassinations - MLK, JFK, Bobby, even Hoffa for the teamsters...
many others.... there have been
cities of fire, and people who
spoke or wrote
about those cities.
comics ranted about their anger and their
heartbreak - and they still do, that’s what comics have always done
and that’s what they’ll continue to do.
people still write
people still write songs
people still care...
and as long as some still care
is isn’t completely hopeless.

the biggest mistake ever made
in the history of the world
was the idea that power
is useful, and that
greed and opportunism is acceptable,
also that trading essentially useless items
is useful.

I don’t care
if you figured out
the power structure - but I’m not saying
it’s gonna collapse. Just that
if you hadn’t’ve figured it
out, it’d still be the same
and it still matters - even if nothing
ever changes - because
if you stop caring -
then they’ve won
cataracts and glaucoma.
Take your own advice - fuck them, every last one.

My husband calls himself
a nihilist.
But he thinks nihilists
are pussies.
My husband wants
to kill himself
everyday.
My husband is
the strongest person
I’ve ever met.
And I better not
walk in one day
on a blood bath
and a kitchen knife
affair.

Because I’ll make love to you
everyday, so you didn’t have
to feel an ounce of pain
or misery. And I’ll always
be there with you, wherever
you are. I do,
and I always
will.
