Heartache Hurricane

My little man, when you were born
We prayed you would grow strong,
For when you came into this world
Something went so wrong.
You didn’t want to take a breath
My son, you were so weak.
It wasn’t ‘til you cried your first
The doctors dared to speak.
I barely caught a glimpse of you
As they rushed you off for care;
Your daddy fell down to his knees
And cried to God this prayer:

I’ve battened down my hatches Lord, we’re headed for a storm
I hope this heartache hurricane won’t become the norm.
Lord, do not leave us stranded in this flood of pain and tears
Or strip away this blessing we’ve prayed for all these years.
Our days on earth are numbered and yours alone to give
I’m praying that my little boy has many more to live.

God answers prayers my little man,
You grew stronger every day;
It’s hard to see that fragile babe
When you run and  play.
But now and then the troubles stir
And your frailties come to light,
And in a flash we’re swept into
Another sleepless night.
When you’re safely tucked away
With a nurse to give you care,
I once again drop to my knees
And pray your Daddy’s prayer:

I’ve battened down my hatches Lord, we’re headed for a storm
For these heartache hurricanes have become the norm.
Lord, do not leave us stranded in this flood of pain and tears
Or strip away this blessing, treasured these few years.
Our days on earth are numbered and yours alone to give;
I’m praying that my little boy has many more to live.

My precious lamb we’ve seen the sun
And skies grown dark with rain.
We’ve reveled in the days of joy,
Grown stronger through the pain.
Your Daddy taught you how to swim
And how to tie your shoes.
When you were only five years old
You learned to sing the blues.
You’re singing with the angels now
In our Father’s precious care,
Once again we’re on our knees
As we come to God in prayer:

We’ve battened down our hatches Lord, we’ve weathered every storm
Through each heartache hurricanes your strength became the norm.
You did not leave us stranded through floods of pain and tears
You blessed us with a treasure we’ll remember all our years.
Our days on earth are numbered and yours alone to give,
And now our little angel has gone home with you to live.

We’ve battened down the hatches Lord, through heartache hurricanes.
And it’s only in our strength from You we’ve weathered all the pains.
Some day we’ll see our little lamb, when you choose to call us too,
But ‘til that day we’ll weather storms that draw us close to you.

Please tell me what you think

    Dear Susan,

It's wonderful to see you writing again after such a long absence during which, however, I can see you have retained both your fine poetic talent and your immense depth of feeling. This poem amply expresses both and, as a father who has lost two children (today, coincidentally, is the fourth anniversary of Jacqui's death) I am deeply touched by the understanding and faith which your words convey - the more so in view of the authorship.
It is a wonderful poem and the prayers it contains are poignant and moving. I cannot imagine that any reader will not be affected by it.
Congratulations, fond respect and love, Hugh Wyles.

This is the consolation of faith, that the hard things have a reason and there is hope through it all. This made me cry, and also more thankful for the years and health of my own children. Thanks Susan.

    Bravo!

If anyone reading this doesn't get moved I don't know what to say...the other night I saw a move titled In His Arms...powerful story that made me think if this...children are his, if they don't get to grow up for whatever the tragic reason, then they just simply went back to him, I sure do say this is a tear jerker that you didn't deserve to go through but your strength shows and the prayer throughout the years was the life perserver of what it was to come. Blessings.
