LIfe and Times of Love

Back when I was a child, just a teen really.
Life was so hard to live, if you were a girl.
For you either had to be a well behave lady,
or you found yourself in the salons.

I opt for neither of those lives. I hunted with
the men, did my fair share of the trapping.
Forego all those dresses that were not meant
for the life of a true lady of the old west.

As you can see I was not the most pretty lady,
but there was only a few men that could out shoot me.
One of them.. ~sighs~  was a man like no other.

Now for my tale...

Sometime back when I thought I knew it all,
and I could best the men of my town.
I did not realize then that they started
to hate me for being better than them.

There was one man, to me he outshined the others,
his moves as he could ride and shoot, man was he good.
I aproached him one day.. and asked for his help,

That man help me to become the best trick shooter
in all these settle states. I could ride and shoot a cigar
out of his mouth without so much a flicker to his hair.

I started to dress like a lady as I grew older around him,
something I never would have done for another soul.

But the man was well worth my doing so.
Now, do not get me wrong, I still did all those
trick rides and shots.. You can not keep me from
my first love.. which is my rifle.

But as time wore on .. my love for him grew,
I never told him as it did not seem right for
he could have anyone he wanted. Oh, we spent
a lot of time with each other.. and had to
get the other out of some kind of trouble or another.

It was around 1895 that I started to drink more and more,
but that did not interfer with the way I could shoot.
Nope, not me, I was just.. well you see, I started to slip more,
yeah that's it, for I would stumble.. and almost fall over my own feet.

One day, I remember, tripping and shooting the bank robbers
as they were leaving the bank, did I see them.. heck no,
for I was drunk again.. but.. that did not stop me from catching them.

One day my man was called out for a gun fight, the kid
was about twenty years younger than him. I asked him
not to go out there for this one. But, no one could stop
him when he made up his mind.

That was the day I lost the only true friend I had
ever had in my entire life. My joy died that day,
even my will to just shoot for the masses.

Now if you ever want to see me, and it is within
the day light hours.. just walk to the edge of town
and look to the lady by the grave.

A grave of the best man that ever lived....

While I realize that you are not at all like Calamity Jane, I must give you recognition for the piece you have done for her here, and the work you so evidently put into it. Your effort is truly appreciated by not only me, but by others as well.

Thank you for the insight, and thank you for the historical perspective as well.

Good luck in the contest, you have penned a winner here in my estimation.

You gave us lovely western history lesson...on Martha Jane Cannary-Burke....I like to add that she was born May 1, 1852....died Aug. 1, 1903...loved Wild bill but never married him...clamied he was father of her child that was put up for adoption. He was killed in (murdered) shot dead in the back of his head in 1876. Later she married Clinton Burke stayed together about 6 years...she was a chronic drunk. worked in the Buffalo Bill wild West show but got fired in 1901....lived a few years the died in 1903 and was buried next to her true love...she had a really unique life from most women back then......thank you for sharing about a woman that lived in 1880....novy
