searching stalks ...

A February rhythm
brought a certain warmth
despite the deep winter chill
and the crest of a cardinal
searching stalks  for seed
gave a flash of a turning season

but snows still come
and drizzled rains too
snow is wet and soft
and rains fill milder days;
a nearer sun paints
halves of purple clouds
bright reds and a luminous pink
dusk hangs, lingers on the evening

the world I see each day
changes to a quicker step
in bright sun, wet wings
unfold, anomalous flies
the drumbeat is heard

but lovers need no other signs
than eyes come close
and smiles of welcome
whether icy ground
or frigid north wind
a breath of the spring within rises
when one speaks
and another listens
in tones of fresh days
in February rhythms

Please tell me what you think

this is so absolutely beautiful, i was watching some cardinals in my trees yesterday...that exchange with another, like collecting little bits of energy from another person, there are daily exchanges which feed people all the time in the depths of winter - LOVE this, h!

I can almost hear Spring whispering - yes, I have that kind of imagination... The sights are changing, the days are getting longer and the sun higher. But yes, Winter is still reigning and after a sunny day isn't a surprise if snow falls.
I loved this poem and the end has a lovely romantic tone. Just perfect

You know sitting down this morning, I heard birds singing, and though the world is still white here, and temperatures are below zero, it brought me a feeling of hope that spring will come. lol. This is one of the best February poems I've read.

  • Okay, this deserves a big.. AWWWW.WWWWWWWWWWWWW.

That's so beautiful. The description of spring are so appealing... the cardinal has particular meaning to me (I have a cardinal couple who nest in my tree each year. I look for them. Even saw the male in winter once. I digress..) But there is certainly a beautiful sense of awakening... and then to compare that to the ever-present newness of beautiful communion with someone you love...just beautiful romantic, lovely, encouraging thoughts. And if one cares to take this to heart, there is a helping of QW as well.
