Mrs. Wolf was taken away.
They buried her on the hill today.
A plain stone marker, all she had,
but, all and all, it wasn't bad.
That's just what Mrs. Wolf would say,
had she looked down to where she lay.
She'd see the best in it I'm sure,
for that was how life was for her.
We watched them pack her life in crates,
and each recalled those special dates,
of years past by, the memories,
they all paraded, there, past me.
They took her rocker, and foot stool,
her needles and the yarn of wool,
and memories of mittens came,
as every Christmas was the same.
When Mrs. Wolf would come to call,
with mittens for us one and all.
And, in each glove there'd always hide,
a shiny dime, she'd tucked inside.
They took her quilts, and her tea pot.
from which the tea was always hot,
when, after we had shoveled her walk,
she'd coax us in for cakes and talk.
They took her radio and books,
the dishes from her breakfast nook,
and all the nick nacks she'd collected,
she'd loved them all, none were neglected,
The salt shakers, her china doll,
the figurines that graced the hall,
They took them all packed carefully,
and with them, went her history.
They took her cats, both gray and old,
but they'll be well looked on, I'm told,
by her grand niece, who loved them too,
just as she had promised she would do.
she'd never had that much, was true,
and yet her cares seemed always few,
She always had a smile to share,
each day, that passed while she was there.
Mrs. Wolf, we'll miss her so,
but she remains inside, you know,
the little lady spirit's still,
lingering there on Harney Hill.
Author notes
This poem isn't new, but the picture so reminded me of old Mrs. Wolf who lived on Harney Hill with her son who was severely crippled and brain damaged from Polio it took me right back to my youth. I could just see her coming down the street with her little wire shopping basket full of walnuts and candy when I saw it.

Oh my! This truly s a beautiful quatrain; the story is absolutely captivating with the imagery of simplicity and the importance it is in life. The bouncy meter is delightful with wonderful rhymes. I’m very impressed with this poem as it shows how much time you took when editing it. I think to make a poem simple takes a lot of time and talent and that is quite evident in this piece of art. Standing ovations and congratulations for winning the top trophy.
Love,

Excellent
Wow this is such a beautiful poem with great imagery, rhyme, rhythm and flow. The story line is precious! What a beautiful woman Mrs. Wolf was to all around. This is such a great poem and so deserving of a gold trophy. It kind of reminded me of my own grandma in whom I have always been very fond memories of. Yes it is easy to miss precious one's such as this lady. Sometimes there seems to be so few souls that are so full of love with a sense of peace and a smile to go with it.
Then I read the Author Notes and I felt so sad about her son. Despite her difficulties with her son she still gave to those around. What a gift of a woman she was to you when you were young. Thank you for sharing such a light hearted and beautiful poem with me.
Wishing You Many Blessings,
Much Love,
Kelle Marie

Just beautifully written, that touches the heart and soul of all who reads it! I remember this old man when I was little that lived next door... we would visit him everyday(he was dying with cancer) there was nothing I enjoyed more than to visit Mr. Lee... I still think of him often today.

You took this pic and gave it life! I'm sure I will read it again and again!
Thanks much for sharing this in my contest!
