The Third Act

Wasn't it fun being two kids
Who just didn't care
Who or when or what or where
It didn't matter as long as we had each other there
But I've spent most of my days
Wondering how we got here
Our curtain closed with no third act
And we left our hearts with nothing to bring it back

Oh how brilliantly we choreographed this dance
And dove right in to take this wonderful chance
But burning within our hearts, we knew the ending
We knew it would always amount to nothing

I wrote the lines, you set the stage
I played my part, you stole the scene
I wept real tears, you tore out the page
You broke my heart, you cut it off clean

What the night brought when we were apart
Spending the stars to save a queen of hearts
This ace of spades wasn't the highest in the deck
You took the honor of being the one we all adored
I was keen to sit and wait till the day I'd have my reward
But that day never came, and that leaves me scarred

Can I write the third act now?
Would you be there to act it out?
I could write you out and go on alone
But what use would forgetting the past be
When you can't turn your heart into stone?

This play will live on in the hearts and minds
Of all who knew us both so well
Still sitting and wondering what will happen next
What tricks we play and things we try to sell
My heart for sale on the chopping block
Come along, my dear, you have the highest bid
I'd give it to you if it would bring you back
