After the fires are over
When all the smoke has gone
We will start the rebuilding
For our children we must carry on.
Many a heart may be breaking
As many a teardrop did fall
As the fires took all our possessions
Our clothing, memories and all.
Now we stand here with nothing
So we have naught we can lose
Right now we start with a new life
We know just what we shall choose
We will always remember
The neighbors we lost on that day
And the mind will never be free of
The horror of that Saturday.
Life is there for the living
So we will enter the fray
We'll rebuild all that was burned
In a bright new town we will stay
When all the smoke has gone
We will start the rebuilding
For our children we must carry on.
Many a heart may be breaking
As many a teardrop did fall
As the fires took all our possessions
Our clothing, memories and all.
Now we stand here with nothing
So we have naught we can lose
Right now we start with a new life
We know just what we shall choose
We will always remember
The neighbors we lost on that day
And the mind will never be free of
The horror of that Saturday.
Life is there for the living
So we will enter the fray
We'll rebuild all that was burned
In a bright new town we will stay
Author notes
The human spirit is indomitable. The homes destroyed will be rebuilt and the towns will come alive again.

This is a great poem (as usual) but about a rather sad event. You have injected a note of optimism though. I suppose it is the best way of dealing with the kind of destruction that happened.

A very sad event, but as in the poem, rebuilding is already under way. Those affected are planning better homes and schools to replace those lost in the fires. Better as in better able to withstand the ravages of bushfires. The resilience of the human spirit is quite amazing. Many thanks my friend, for your comments and thoughts.

Encouraging and inspiring.
Yes the homes will be rebuilt, and the towns will grow again in unity of spirit, determination, and dedication to lost friends!!
A very heartfelt write.

I am a very lucky old man, I have seen the rebirth of a few small towns and communities after disasters and know the spirit that pervades these people. They will live a full life again. Thanks again for your comments and thoughts. I have a special place for you as I know you are too close to the fires for comfort.

Beautiful, it's amazing how all people become friends and willing to help in time of disaster..stay well my friend...

The getting together after any disaster seems to be a human trait. Together some closure can be more readily achieved, and each supports the other building strength for them all as a unit of society. I appreciate your commenting on this one as it is close to my heart.

Out of disaster comes beauty. Well written about a tragedy we all feel - even so far away.

many thanks for your response. the tragic loss of life is unprecedented but the survivors will recover and rebuild a better lifestyle than the one they lost. I feel so sad about the human losses and also the wildlife within the fire areas. They too, have suffered tremendous losses.

So like the phoenix, rebuilding from the ashes, never cast down for long, and going on in honour of those who can't. Great work, Bob, simple but heart-felt, and all the stronger for that.

Thanks Mercedes, it has been a real heartbreaker and is not finished yet. Fires still burning. On the opposite end of the spectrum is Queensland with 62% of the state affected by floods. They say that Qld's floodwaters will reach Lake Ayre in South Aust in a few months from now. Mother Nature is sure giving Aussie a rough time of it just now.

Great work Bob.

Many thanks John. Its just a quick poem to highlight the spirit of those affected by this disaster. They are suffering so much right now, but they will rise again.

Wonderfully written and so very true indeed. When it is all done, new towns will emerge, but I hope this time, the lessons will be learned. Each one of these new homes needs to built with a shelter and be able to stand ready to fight others that will come, because it will come. This land is fire prone. Much thought has to be given to the way fire barriers are placed and kept up to date. I think this piece says everything about what it means to be a true fighter. Many of these people have seen bushfires come down on them before, but not like this demon. With another hundred missing or there abouts, it is one to learn from. God bless you, Bob. Fantastic write.

I doubt if there will be many lessons learned. This is the third time in my life that there has been major destruction from fires such as these. The human spirit will not be put down and the towns and houses will be rebuilt. I hope they accept the ever present danger of future fires and make sure that adequate precautions are taken with forest management in the future. many thanks for your thoughts and comments. I always look forward to reading what you think.

Bob, my heart felt thoughts and prayers go out to you all over there in Aus at this very frightening and sad time. Your poem here reflects the strength and determination of everyone involved, to march forward in the face of adversity, and pick up the pieces to rebuild their lives...God bless and keep you all safe...mal

Some of the fires are still burning and some towns are still in potential danger, but there is a lot of movement about rebuilding already. Survivors want to return to burnt out rubble of theeor town and start the clenaing up process. May God bless them all and help them with the inner strength they will need.
Thanks you for reading and commenting, Mal. Much appreciated.
