The heart of a soldier is seldom shown,
bombs, bloodshed, is all that's known.
Let us not forget that before the guns,
they are moms, dads, daughters, sons.
Endure conditions most can't conceive,
scenes so horrific it's hard to believe.
Years can feel like exercises in futility,
yet no loss of compassion or humility.
The heart of our soldiers are truly rare,
unappreciated, and yet they do care.
Take a good look at the picture above,
picture our soldiers, picture the love.
Orphaned on the war torn streets of Iraq,
adopted by troops, then brought them back.
Author notes
I'm sure most of you know this is a true story.
One of the nicer stories since the war began.
Definitely some of our country's finest
men and women with little if any exceptions.

Grood write. A lot of times people really dont care to really in depth look as soldiers as normal people. Sometimes they are viewed as pure killing machines without consciense or emotion. other times rethless bloodthirsty killers. The side thats never seen especially in Iraq is that the real embassadors to that country are our soldier and those in most parts of the country they very endearewd to the citizens. When me and some fo my unit left the people went into public mourning. But unfortunatly the few bad soldier and the few ares where our soldiers are hated are the only areas that the news likes to cover.

I never heard that story but thank you for bringing it to my attention. It is I guess a well known fact that in any war, soldiers seem to be the ones who have the hearts of gold and are always living for the week and the betrodden. I have heard many a story like this in the past, but your write really brought that home. Lovely picture and I am guessing these are the two dogs? I loved this piece to bits. It is sensational to say the least. Thank you for the beautiful story in poem.
