Boyar, do you hear?

Graffito on a wall in Poeinari castle in Wallachia; believed to be in the handwriting of Anna Lund of Helsingfors, vampire hunter, daughter of Professor Jakob Lund of Helsingfors, and also thought by some to be the mother of Abraham van Helsing of Leyden. Anna Lund’s obsessive hunt for surviving members of the Order of the Dragon, led her to equate the legendary Dracula with the Wallachian warrior-hero Vlad Țepeş; many of her contemporaries therefore doubted her sanity, citing this doggerel as evidence. Translated from German.

Drip by drip

and drop by drop

the seconds pass

till time shall stop

Chime by chime

and tick by tock

the sound of this

worm-eaten clock

Boyar, she is coming, your enemy!

Boyar, do you hear?

Step by step

and pace by pace

what terror makes

my heartbeat race?

Phantoms flit

of Jew and Turk

and Christian men

– unholy work!

Boyar, I am coming, your enemy!

Boyar, do you hear?

On and on

against all hope

the dark –  the dank

this downward slope

Grip – oh grip

my wooden lance

Impaler should

I fear your glance?

Boyar, I am closer, your enemy!

Boyar, do you fear?

Shade by shade

and shape by shape

the mists that swirl

the graves that gape

Chill tests chill

and heat tries heat

the eyes that hold

the wings that beat

Boyar, here before you, your enemy!

Boyar, do you fear?

Steep descent

and midnight bell

the door flung wide

– the mouth of hell!

Drip by drip

and drop by drop

the seconds pass

            till time shall stop…

Very interesting piece. It definently reads like something out of an old poetry book. I couldn't help thinking of The Castle of Ontario as I read it, even though that has nothing to do with vampires. I think it was something about the tone of the piece.

    Thanks for entering.

This is rich. The background you provide is wonderfully creative and casts the entire poem in a different light.
It adds layers to the words and carries me back to those dark days.
The Boyars, thank goodness they are finally unseated.

    beautiful

Nothing like an original bheag penned in the dark genre to get the juices flowing. You chose the perfect meter for this poem as it "step by step" brings the reader deep into the theme. Great stuff Sis!

A 'dark' Mairi, this I enjoyed reading very much. A chilling tale driven on by great flow and rhythm.

Deserving of more than these three scared bunnies.

Superbly done, it has the feel of translated poetry, and the characterisation is wonderful

    I love it!
