See Mah Sister

Well, I see my sister
wanna tell her she is brave
for being a black woman any day
Road from the past
A perfect home front
Girl, anywhere you live, anywhere you want
Don’t nobody know you like me
Sister

I see my sister walking
Head up to meet the ceiling
Switching and shaking
Inspiring, soul revealing
I think to myself “gone girl”
and I am straight
I like seeing her be proud
that way... my sister

See my sister stand up
Pushing before she's ready
Moving like me
Ain’t nothing better
Works hard at the plantation
Write twice the letters
than they say
Sister

I watch her stare him in his eyes
He stare back wondering why
Hands on her hips
Fire from her lips
Why this woman talk and act in fits
She tells him she feel him down deep
but she won’t weep anymore over him
She won’t weep anymore
Sister

Look at my sister
changing clothes like a chameleon
Can't go like she came in
Learning to hide genuine feelings
Can't claim an identity that the world
keeps stealin
How's it that you know you're real?
Sister

I look at her face
Pretty ms. thang
Swing her back porch
Working that brain
She could have most any man
Before she do she got a plan
In every shade of pinks and grays
She gone be more important she prays
If she still here

He can chase her
She will stay
I see my sister… start to wave
Sister

You capture culture, history, sibling rivalry, love, and a gazillion more things in this intimate, defiant, dance of a poem. Someday I am going to have to take you home with me so we can sit and spit and talk and let the day waste away.
    Love, Tom B.
