The Oak Tree

Missing image

It was beneath the ancient oak through childhood they would play
and in it's shade his love for her did grow
So when the stormy skies of war came calling him away
beneath the ancient oak he told her so

He looked into the lovely eyes which stole away his heart
He took her in his arms and held her tight
Oh darlin' when the dawn has come you know I must depart
but let me be with you through out the night

And, so beneath an amber moon and star encrusted skies
they clung to one another through the night
they spoke of only hopeful things and said their last good byes
a dreadin' his departure with the light

The news of battle filled the months after she  watched him go
with every day came news of victory
so sure she was he'd soon return where she'd meet him below
the crown of branches of the old oak tree

So when the troops returnin' home did come to town that day
she raced to meet the one she'd waited for
A hand  fell on her shoulder and a voice filled with dismay
let her know that her lover was no more

They brought the casket down the path they'd walked so many times
and laid him there to rest beneath the tree
So sad the story woven was the worst of all war's crimes
the knowin' that their love could never be.

    Masterpiece of Emotions

This a magnificent write, done masterful and vividly
the way you build up our hope; he'll return, then the tragic news rocks the emotions of your readers
learning he had expired. Reminded me of when I first read "Annabell Lee" so tragic.......your talent is awesome....Novy
