There’s money and fame for a man with a name
But a price on his head and a grave for a bed
Makes a hard reputation from speed with a gun
And Hell’s destination for a man on the run.
He patiently waits on a hot, dusty street
For a man to appear, his appointment to keep
Batwings swing open, this thing has begun
He casually turns his back to the sun.
His shadow is death keeping pace with his tread
“Keep walking, gunfighter, I’ll go on ahead
‘Til I touch that man with the star on his vest.
One more notch on your legend to add to the rest”.
Two hands snake down to hot handled iron.
Both colts clear leather in split second time
Both barrels together spit fire and lead
Blasting a path to the land of the dead.
Two freshly dug holes scar the side of Boot Hill.
1st of June 1880, a “righteous kill”
A tin star is nailed to a marker next door
And death lies laughing in the arms of a whore.

I really like this. It held my interest from beginning to end and the rhyme is very, very good. Thank you for entering the contest.

Very well done. Has almost a song like quality to it and the last line says it all. Good luck in the contest and happy trails.

This is classic western poetry in rhyme, steady as the gentle lope of a good horse. I didn't miss the double rhymed lines in the first stanza, well done! It's hard to carry that pattern throughout an entire writing. You have so many good lines here, "both colts clear leather...both barrels together" You know the subject matter, I can tell you are a fan of the old west.
