What Is A Need?

What is a need?
Everything has them
Is it a weakness?
For without something to
Fulfill or stave off
You cannot survive,
It will consume you
Steal your focus, time, mind
Leaving you with a void of
Lacking and unfulfillment

Or are needs an identity?
For in them all things
Find what they are
In a plants need of
Soil, water, and sun
Does it have an identity?
They need animals
Animals need them
Do animals find an identity
In their need of plants?

What separates us from
A bear, wolf, or snake
It’s not the claws
Fangs, four legs, or vertebrae
I say it’s our need
To love and be loved
Above that of a cub
Needing it’s mother only to survive
Humans alone need to
Feel love for the sake of love
Is this a weakness?
As a need you can’t fulfill for yourself
Or is it our identity?
Something that separates us
From the plants, animals

When the need for love
Remains suppressed
The animal side is all that’s left
Making the basic needs
The only needs
Taking our identity
Making us without love
Less than human
Just another animal
I need you
For without you
I am just another animal
