Mary Queen of Scots

In the still grey light of death
nothing moves
A lady kneels before the shadows
clutching a lace kerchief
She smiles a smile of sweetness
but her eyes reveal the sadness
and her lips withold the agony of love
Dreams of granduer
worthless as sand
The quality of life succeeds the gift
Tangled feelings
as they lower down the axe head
Who would know the secret promises she keeps?
No bitterness escapes her
how long will her painful heart prevail?
No longer a royal queen
just a lonely frightened maid
caught within the wind
Veils of tears
stifled in the eyes of onlookers
as ghosts of the past filled the room
The lady is gone
all that remains
is her simple prayer.

    Sad bitter truths

  • a good poem penned - ah life and the insanity of love or jealousy of love, when the axe slips across the skin and bone all one can do is cry out to god and ask forgiveness for the life that has been lived. history teaches us, but sadly we never pay it much attention when we make brand new mistakes that echo of the old ones

      Hi Hazel!
      Another queen of Scots then!
Thank you so much for your lovely comments. I'm so glad you enjoyed this one.
We spend a lot of our holidays in Scotland, especially the far north coast near dunnet head and the stacks. It is beautiful!
