jim, johnny, jack...hell i forget his name

sometimes
simple tasks are dry
as the horse's tail

while spring
is half-melted snow
and damp hay

i am wet ground
riding west
on a great thin blade

i look
at my half-empty friend
carrying the thin man
of me
with no jacket
required

And sometimes the warmth is a hoax. This is brilliant, the last stanza absolutely stunning.

You know...your stanzas are always unbelievably kick-ass, but the ending lines of your stanzas all here kick even more ass. Love it.

but hey...its one helluva ride though! Now if I'm going to forget someone's name its a lot better to wake up, look over and forget the name of your half-empty friend than to wake up and forget the name of the friend who took "no jacket required" literally. "dry as a horse's tail"? lol...I never heard that expression before. Does express the feeling quite well.

  • I think your boys have never been personified quite so well. Loved this!

  • This reminds me of George Thorogood and his best friends ... that's what good blues and country songs are made of, but shit for livin'

oooo, I can read lots of stuff into this one. Always been one of my favorite things about some poetry. Anyway, I may be way off base, but here is what I see.

On a concrete level, I see a cross country truck driver driving from Florida to california with someone he gave a ride to just west of the mountains of New Mexico.

On a more abstract level, I see the boredom of the day to day, and the dissappointment of expectation but a willingness to change, move and grow. I see the tendency to compare our outsides to others insides and finally figure out it isnt about the outsides at all.

Lol, all this from the scary place I call my mind *hug

Very Bukowski-esque... bleedin' with wearyness. Great imagery pushes this along to an awesome ending! Best of luck to you!!!
