inbetween

the cub learns to hunt
he prowls all about
his senses are hightened and keen
yet back in the den
he lays off to the side
for he's only an inbetween

he knows all they taught
he has listened and learned
he's seen all there is to be seen
back with the den
he yearns to join in
for he's only an inbetween

the adults lay around
the cubs play and fight
they venture towards the ravine
he sits back and stares
longing to play
for he's only an inbetween

he is not very old
no longer a cub
not adult but no longer teen
not one or the other
but somehow both
he is only an inbetween

Author notes

i am redefining the term "inbetween" usually used to define children who are not yet teenagers but no longer sweet, innocent, little children (tweens). Instead I am saying this "cub" is no longer a child yet not quite an adult, yet he should be an adult by now but still feels much like a child. I'm sure you want to call this immaturity, but that would be what I just described without the knowledge that was going on. This "cub" knows how he feels and thinks... and is not immature. Wow... this note was a lot longer than I wanted it to be. Like 4 or 5 post-its too long. Oh well, ciao!
