Undercover investigators from Swiss Animal Protection/EAST International recently toured fur farms in China's Hebei Province, and it quickly became clear why outsiders are banned from visiting. There are no regulations governing fur farms in China—farmers can house and slaughter animals however they see fit—meaning miserable lives and excruciating deaths. The investigators found horrors beyond their worst imaginings and concluded, "Conditions on Chinese fur farms make a mockery of the most elementary animal welfare standards. In their lives and their unspeakable deaths, these animals have been denied even the simplest acts of kindness."

On these farms, foxes, minks, rabbits, and other animals pace and shiver in outdoor wire cages, exposed to driving rain, freezing nights, and, at other times, scorching sun. Mother animals, who are driven crazy from rough handling and intense confinement and have nowhere to hide while giving birth, often kill their babies after delivering litters. Disease and injuries are widespread, and animals suffering from anxiety-induced psychosis chew on their own limbs and throw themselves repeatedly against the cage bars

With due respect, isn't writing poems a little on the futile side? Wouldn't organising a protest to the Embassy be more practical?

Well Kevin, the idea is numbers. The more interest in the problems we create the more power it holds. We currently have a facebook group with around 600 last I was on there. All these avenues are drawing attention to the situation. If you feel you can organise a protest in your country to your government about stopping imports of fur etc then please do it. We need all the help and all the ideas we can get to assist in forcing the powers to act. Our poems will be used to hit them from newspapers, TV etc. No-ones real names will be used by the way. Only their AP names or another they choose when the time comes.
This approach is the heart string one. Letting people know the pain it causes. Poets send strong messages and they are effective.

sounds almost like the dairy farms here. Farmers penning animals up so they can't move, etc. Of course there is also Barnum and Bailey in trouble over their elephants which is hard to control without Federal legislation because they move from state to state ... let's fix the problems here and then move on to China.

Universal problems all bounce off one another so fixing is something we can't do but awareness and putting pressure on the powers that be is something we CAN do for the benefit of the entire world.
