Kind of heart and a friend to the end,
is within you and your knowledge you lend.
Reaching out with love and sometimes pushed away,
from those who were never taught Id say.
Sad it is when you reach out and help those in need,
and they follow you until they feel they now can see.
They listen to others and to fit in a group,
they leave the very best friend they could have had and that was you.
But fear not for in the lesson they so learn,
when their new friend in time shows them no concern.
They reach back to the friend they so left behind,
forgetting on how they were so unkind.
Forgiveness soothes the heart and one must feel blessed,
that even though they did you wrong they return when left.
They know of the kind heart and in time they will learn,
that true friendship and love has to be earned.
Many times when I was going to school I saw this very thing,
and when I would help another then they shunned me it gave a sting.
To see them leaving me for the in class I knew trouble was to be,
only I couldn't help her for she refused to see.
Then the turn around and I saw her run my way,
hurt and in need of love for her friends had pushed her away.
Learning in the choices we make often they too come with a sting,
to follow others and not be yourself you lose your muse.
I was asked once why and how can you be happy all the time,
and my answer was I'm always myself and my life is mine.
I follow no one but my faith and show love,
and believe me if you want to be happy that's more than enough.
There are always rules through your entire life,
and the sooner you learn them everything will be alright.
But as long as you refuse to follow the rules indeed,
you will be unhappy and never be free.

Before you toss a friend away ask yourself are you not doing exactly what they have done to you along the way . Be the true friend and communicate and let your feelings be known and see within the moment how friendships are grown

I like the title and your poem speaks clearly re giving and taking to nurture friendship. Friendships are not tested by what we agree over, rather what is disagreed over disagreably surely? Perhaps a balance of being there, being able to care and share, of affording the benefit of doubt, yes understanding sometimes a friend is more demanding and at other times maybe perplexing or vexing, yes give a little but don't let them take the lot. I agree that communication is the key but that only unlocks if it's regaled with honesty and not a facade, a front, to test the waters again. Uh oh, am rambling again aren't I dear poetess, you share your big beautiful heart for all to see.
