Rebel Hearts

Missing image

 My Dearest William

How precious it was to receive your letter this morning,

knowing in my heart that you still live.

My hopes again do soar in anticipation

with each passing day,

I grow more confident of your treasured return.

For I fear, that without your love,
I may just simply fade away.
Knowing  well  how my light reflects

most assuredly from your eyes.
That light, my love did indeed increase fourfold

the moment your cherished letter arrived.

The news of late has been most troublesome.

I fear for Richmond and your dear life .
Yet I do know that your love for us and Country

burns with quiet ardour

within your gallant heart.

So proud I am that you are such a man,

my heart could not love you more.
Nor do I regret in the least
that service that you bear
for freedom and our home.

Know then my love
that within this woman’s heart
does beat a mighty tattoo.
My love and strength I send to you

confident that you will use us rightly so.

In loving devotion:

 Phoebe

Know also that our dear children
Stand  with you in silent affirmation of your
Love and honour.

Dearest Phoebe,

I received your letter yesterday,
and glad was I of its receipt,
for I have had no mail in near three weeks.

Oh Phoebe, my heart goes out to you
for all the deprivation you endure,
and to our children who must bear
the burden of this awful war.

Yesterday, I rode with Colonel Jones
between the lines and saw,
at some miles distance,
the camp of our cruel foes.

And yet I could not look on it
with equanimity,
for surely they must number
worthy men among them.

Knowing what I do of war,
I dread the upcoming battle.
Can it ever be right to kill
God's children in his name?

Their blood is just as red,
their dead as dead,
their screams of wounded
just as wretched as our own.

This coming battle will decide
the fate of dear old Richmond
and our cause; but Phoebe,
if I fall remember this:

The love that binds
us two as one is spirit forged
and will endure our deaths
and for all time.

Your devoted husband,

William

ps: Kiss the children for me.

Oh you two! This is near perfection, a letter that would endure in any civil war museum if found intact.
Even though you exceeded length, which we had discussed, I fear I would even ask for a bit longer on this particular write, purely based on this statement...

"The news of late has been most troublesome."

What indeed is this news foreboding, regarding dear old Richmond?

Other than this, a stunning collaboration!
    Beautiful, just beautiful.

Thank you for entering, and good luck.

    Ocean.

      News

The news, of course, is that McClelland's army threatens Richmond (They could see the church steeples) and General Johnson is wounded.

we explained a bit in the AN, 7 day battle, north advancing towards Richmond, but we kept it brief as we were over the limit, I am pleased that you wanted more, perhaps round two would be in order??

    beautiful

Another wonderful job my dear friend, eloquent as always with a truth and sadness about them both. To be away from loved ones in the throes of battle or worse waiting for one who may never return. The plight of man is sometimes difficult for me to grasp. It's never live and let live, which were the truest word sever written. Best of luck to you as always, your hard felt sincerity again coming through your words, Boog

Incredible! People so often lose sight, when reading about history, that this was about human beings. These people had families, homes, emotions, feelings, children, parents, grandparents, and those at home, that worried about them, when they left for war. We all bleed red. You illustrate this so well in your piece, that I was blown away. Very touching, that it brings the "idea" of war, right to the doorstep, not some faraway place that we don't see.

Great job you two! Making those people real in my head.
I can see him relating some of the battle but not all. As a man who loves would not burden her with the gritty details.
but in parting you could feel his hope ebbing and wanting her to have a final message in case he succumbed. Her letter showed bravery in not breaking down but lifting him up in his time of need. I thought this was wonderful..it came alive for me. Bravo!
