It was a scorching Indian summer
the day that feller walked barefoot into town
With blood under his fingernails
and a smile in lieu of frown
I wanted to ask him what it was so I did
he just gave me a wink, then whistled with a nodded head
I almost said: "Hey man! there's no need to be like that!"
But then I saw he was carryin' a baseball bat
well he just started
to bust the headlights outta old cars
glass exploded when he whistled and
on the hot tar lay sharp shards
the beepers beeped
and old ladies yelled
from win'w's like bald eagles
the frightened kids in the street
turned tail to run home
and feed their Beagles
he didn't turn heads
well, he just broke necks
and when i started runnin', too
he said: "don't go---yer next."
well, my lips turned blue.
I pleaded for mercy
got down on one knee and implored:
"spare me! spare me!" and "spare me, oh Lord!"
then I looked him in the gleaming eye
and asked: "wha'd I ever do to you?"
to which the brute replied: "Nuthin', that's for sure."
... When I got to the pearly gates
Saint Peter caught an ugly glimpse
of my mangled face, gouged-out eyes
and bloodied fingertips
I asked, "Can I come in?"
groping for the golden handle
Peter checked the books again
and finally took off his sandals
he walked through the gates
and up the escalator,
reaching a throne where the Dove sat
God's voice boomed down
rattling three nearby crowns
and I turned on my heels and walked off
Because with swelling eyes
God spoke and I took note,
and I finally hear Him say:
"IF ONE OF YE IS SPURNED AWAY
THEN I AM SPURNED AWAY ALSO."
