edisonian evolution

The day I knew I was no longer human was the day
that I looked at my own personal journal, sitting on my desk,
leather bound and inconspicuous,
and wondered if its batteries were charged.

The day I knew that humanity was lost was the day
I saw kids mourning on facebook, commenting back and
forth on each other's walls for hours
when they could have been holding each other.

we prefer to push they keys of the keyboard
because we're too scared to push people anymore.
we've forgotten human contact, and my roommate sits
across from me listening to Obama's latest
speech and praising his glory when he could be out
doing something to make that change that he was militant about
first semester.

Which reminds me of something I should have learned
first semester,
don't argue with Alex Weiss.  He will run semantic circles
around you and leave you sobbing and wishing for a simpler
day before every twelve year old could learn to "argue"
on the internet.  The structure of debate is dead.
The Socratic method has been assassinated,
because we Google will not tell you the meaning of life
at the click of a button.

And I'm not advocating a return to Luddites.
I'm aware of the irony that I am, now typing this poem
on a computer.  But listen to me when I say
"I looked at Orion tonight."
"I saw something beautiful in nature today."

Electricity and humans have changed together,
let's call it an edisonian evolution,
humans can no longer run without batteries.

Good god, we have become machines.

So, what do you think?

I want to smash my computer to pieces after reading this... and no, that is not an insult against the poem, this just gave me a reality check.

Maybe you should've taken over Obama's speech and read this to the country!!

This makes me want to unplug the suburban socket connecting my left elbow to public school walls and run all the way to Boston.

if you weren't so right about all of this, i would call you cynical.
i wish i could hug you for writing this, instead of typing and giving you three yellow cheering circle people.

  • "because we Google will not tell you the meaning of life"
    - we google?
    - that said, best line ever. Going as my msn screenname [lol, another irony]

"Good god, we have become machines."
    - bad god, actually but what i really want to say is to leave it out.

"we prefer to push they keys of the keyboard
because we're too scared to push people anymore."
    - spot on.

"don't argue with Alex Weiss. He will run semantic circles
around you and leave you sobbing and wishing for a simpler
    day"
    - I'm so curious that you should tell me about this right away!

    - I'd probably not question humanity, you know.
what I'd question is your sanity
