Can't We Be Friends?

5am
and you call in tears,
needing warmth.
'I love you' you hissed,
sibilance that was
ambrosia to
ears lusting for
false hope.
Bodies moved and
'I love you'
once again
but in the morning:
'Can't we be friends?'

Stolen boozy kisses.
they taste of gin, and
eyes locked across a
crowded bar.
back alley hand wandering and
a hangover clings like
your tangled sheets.
another night with you misspent
but still:
'Can't we be friends?'

old pet names
purred and
remembering the good times.
calling you and being told
'no', but when you beckon...
to you i go.
lies and half-truths
i'm not sure what was meant
and at the end of it all,
'Can't we be friends?'

long distance and
we make promises.
'One more time'.
Dial tone.
And like that, it's done.
another wound my heart must mend,
and still you ask:
'Can't we be friends?'

No.

Author notes

I wrote this late last year, actually. Leafing through old notebooks recovered from my old apartment, I found it. It's raw, but rings true to how I feel. The last bit, the answer to the questions, was a more recent addition.

Please tell me what you think

I disagree that the answer is *always* no, but once the relationship is over, it is over. And if you couldn't just be friends from the beginning, it won't happen. First impressions just last the longest sometimes. The "old pet names" stanza is the best one, it tells a lot of the story itself and flows so easily.

    Dear Chris,

When there's a breakup there's no going back, especially if the one who ended it doesn't want to.
There's no way they can remain friends, it never works, I know from past experience when I was young how much it can hurt at the time, except for the three I was engaged to before Bob I can't even remember the names of the others and I ended up with the man I really love and we're still together after 47 years. I know this happened a while ago and it's great that you are letting go and saying no to any more hurts.
    Love Joan
