A Rose In The Night

“Dear precious Darling, how are you today?
Please tell me you’re well and doing okay.
I bet your roses are blooming; it’s nearly June.
I wish I could see them, but I’m not coming home soon.

How are the children? I sure miss them so!
I wish I could be there, watching them grow.
Tell them Daddy misses them and still loves them a lot
Tell Tommy I still have the present he bought.

I hate to ruin the mood and rob your face of its smile
And I’m really sorry, that my news is so vile.
I hate to break your heart, and see you in pain,
But please wait a minute and let me explain.

I fear my time of grace is coming to an end.
I feel that it’s close, just around the bend.
I thought I should warn you, so it won’t hurt so badly.
But do me a favor and live your life gladly.

I do have some things that I would like you to do:
Remember God loves you and He’ll take care of you.
Please cover my grave with roses so red,
Like the ones that you held on the day that we wed.

I’ll always love you and be in your heart,
Even if death will tear us apart.
But have no worry, there’s no need to cry
You’ll join me in heaven, when you also die.

My end is coming. I’m nearing my death.
I’ll be thinking of you when I take my last breath.
Til death do us part, we both made the vow,
Goodbye my love, goodbye for now.”

Then Alice awoke and sat up in her bed,
Realizing the letter was made up in her head.
She said thanks to God that it was only a dream.
Then she fell back to sleep as she watched the moon gleam.

She woke up again to a knock on the door.
She looked at the clock; it read quarter to four.
So she got out of bed to see who was there.
“It’s the middle of the night! Why don’t they care?”

She opened the door and saw the army greens
His hands behind his back, her husband looked so serene
“Alice, it’s me. I’ve come home for good.”
Anthony smiled and said, “I told you I would.”

She threw her arms around him with tears in her eyes
She said, “I can’t believe this; it’s such a surprise!”
He could see that his absence had caused her to rack.
Then he pulled something from behind his back.

It was dozens of roses, in deep shades of red.
“These are for you, love,” he quietly said.
“Don’t ever leave me,” she said with a shaky voice.
He said, “I’d never leave you, whether or not I had the choice.

“You are my rose, that shines in the night.”
You are my rose, so sweet and so bright.
I’ll always love you, until the end of time.
To ever leave you, would be the worst possible crime.”

When love is this great it will persevere
When love is this strong, there’s nothing to fear.
So this is a story of love that can’t sever,
Love like a rose that blooms forever and ever.
