with a smile
i read someone 'hearts' me
with love and a cherished palm-print
written over and over
blackfelt pen on the envelope
thickening of paper and my tree comes to mind
inside a garden in louisana
time moves us like shadow boxes
along a brick wall
where memories are solid and sound
somewhere; in new york
a girl who wears funky hats
sits quiet at a desk and smiles too
she has inbred light
and the same hands as me
on her desk sits an empty mug
with a telling swirl of coffee grounds
the only difference
she likes hers sweet
and i take mine sugar-free
i read someone 'hearts' me
with love and a cherished palm-print
written over and over
blackfelt pen on the envelope
thickening of paper and my tree comes to mind
inside a garden in louisana
time moves us like shadow boxes
along a brick wall
where memories are solid and sound
somewhere; in new york
a girl who wears funky hats
sits quiet at a desk and smiles too
she has inbred light
and the same hands as me
on her desk sits an empty mug
with a telling swirl of coffee grounds
the only difference
she likes hers sweet
and i take mine sugar-free

aww gill, what a lovely little tribute to suzi! I'm sure she enjoyed this, as did I. Thanks so much for entering.

It seems to me that there are some ways in which we will always stand alone in this world... but it's only from here, I think, that we are able to appreciate the most precious value in true friendship; a value which is greater than the 'aloneness' yet still respecting and accepting this right of individuality.
'hearts me' ... I much like the way this quality has been expressed, without being defined into a labelled box.

-
Awww, this makes me smile
Shucks you two!
This explains why you have yours sugar-free - you already got enough sweetness
It is a beautiful poem

-
and i raise my cup to both of you, gilly. beautiful poetry that shines with that special closeness that exists among soul mates
... this is lovely and precious - just like you

What a sweet, thoughtful write. Suzi must've been tickled.

-
you may not take sugar in your coffee but you put plenty sweet in your valentine.

You paint poignantly with love and light and enable the reader to both see and feel this connection that is as close as a warm thought. Delightful.

time changes us and all, but it teaches too and sometimes we learn the really important things of life...beautiful poetry here... a lot of "heart" in this poem...PK

-
that is 'life' and 'love' as labled. your hands across the water posey uses a lot of folded, internal things like envelope, inside the garden, palm-print, etc. that make me think of places in the heart, not just louisana, but grounds in a mug and the sweetness of friendship. -sweetnlowfish
