Swept Dust

As the world rumbles around
I feel empty and sadden by
The waste of time of trying
To understand those around me

Tears fall silently to the
Earthshaken ground as storms
Wave into me, knocking me
From one tragedy to the next

Coldness set's itself in and
Lingers for far too long, but
As the dreams come, the heat
Rises only to be hit back

Looking at reality's harshness
The dust finally settles and I'm
Left holding the broom, trying
To sweep up the dirt that's left

Author notes

I originally was going to write about how the dirt settles and leaves dust upon the lives of those around me, but I decided to write this for emotional purposes. My feelings have become scattered about like dirt swirling up into a torrent, and I am looking for the day that I can pick up the emotional broom and settle my dust.

Sometimes reality is a little harsh. I like the analogy of the dust settling after things are in a whirl. You have written a poem that many will relate to I think.

Thanks for your entry and best of luck in the contest. *hug

  • I agree with Janice. It may take a lot of time, but you'll settle it eventually. Hopefully it's soon. Good luck in the contest. I really liked this poem, even though it stirs up some old memories.
