Breakup Mathematics

Breakup Mathematics

One box, a fireplace, and some pictures to burn.
A pair of jeans, two hoodies, some shirts to return.
She says, “It’s really not your fault.”

My favorite hat, like twenty shirts, some cd’s in a stack.
Two love poems, romantic dinners, words I’ll never get back.
She says, “I never meant for things to end like this.”

Like seven dollars in gas, twenty minutes, familiar drive.
Warm smiles, laughter, comfort, I’ll leave the stuff outside.
She says, “I’ll always love you – as a friend.”

Three drinks at the bar we once let birthday shots fly.
Vibrations, rings, beeps, texts, sighs.
A phone on silent, a changed resolve, a new direction.

Author notes

A heartbreak poem for the contest. I've revised this three times already, trying to keep it with the numbers and images while never going too far into detail. I still struggle with the final stanza and would love advice and critiques on everything.

I enjoyed this poem i thought it was definatly lacking somthing. Maybe it's the lack of detail or imagery, but it almost seems empty. I feel that by adding a little detail you could definatly make this into something special. This poem and you definatly have potential.
