March Right In

March Right In

They dug a lot of graves in the last hundred years;
Most of them for people who were dead.
They dug some really long ones and the ones who shed the tears
Were fellas who just marched right in instead.
March right in Canadians, you Germans and you French.
Quick time all you Yanks and Japanese.
Pick your final resting place and have a cup of tea.
Soon enough they'll bring you to your knees.
Lay down in the squishy mud and soon it covers you.
Buddies marching step right on your face.
March right in the next platoon and have another go
'Til a bomb just covers up the place.
March right in?  If they ask me I'll quickly let them know
I prefer cremation to a muddy trench
Pushing up the daisies out in Flanders or Phnom Penh.
I'll just sit here quiet on the bench.

    Thanks.

    If you get a chance look up Robert Service's book; Rhymes of a Red Cross Man. There's a lot of good war stuff in there. My favourite is My Prisoner.
