i.
Carried low across the burnt sienna earth
the leaf turns red and falls,
takes refuge in its own shadow
as the small clawed feet
of Fennecs scratch and scuff
exposing lattice works of veins and stem
Do you remember those nature days...?
grubby school books crammed
with wet green leaves from summer trees
their thick vessels gorged
with sap the russet colour of thirst
ii.
His dark hand against my pale belly,
stretched and misshapen, heavy
intelligent eyes flare in the dusk
the blue of restless veins, skin blotched red
like dancing leaves on a windy day
The badland winds gather strength,
blow down the highway, distend
fingers of sand across the black top
and on we drive,
drive ceaselessly
beneath a lapis sky, bright
with the first imaginings of stars…
