The Door

There is a door, out somewhere in space
that if opened will take you far 'way
to lands full of wonder, beauty and grace,
but beware-- for forever you'll stay.

The door only opens but once for your hand
at which point i shall never again,
and should you go into this wondrous land,
you'll remain 'mongst its e'er verdant plains.

So with caution must you turn the knob on this door
for it locks on the outside, you see,
and inside you'll remain, knowing friendship no more,
for we seem to have misplaced the key.

Though the world on that side of the portal is fair,
free from war, free from strife and disease,
there exists something grim, something terrible there
that can bring e'en the strong to their knees.

They are safe from all pain, yes (of physical sort),
but they find they're completely alone;
and this solitude here can a weak mind distort:
to forever be the only one.

Indeed, there's a door out somewhere in space
behind which there's no evil or fear,
but I'm decidedly fond of this mad human race,
so I think I shall simply stay here.
