Midnight has long come and gone
but my duties force me to stay
As I watch them, I remember
those elegant bygone days
When girls were ladies in dresses
that swayed gently to and fro
Their beaus, standing tall and erect
like starched penguins in a row
Those arms so politely offered
had white gloved hands laid upon
Shy lowered eyes, that even I
could see mischief peeking from
It all looked very formal
this invitation to the dance
But deep down inside, their hearts beat wild
for this could be their chance
To meet the one they had longed for
to make their life complete
As I watch, nothing has changed
just the clothes, and the music's rhythmic beat.
