Distance

The distance between two lovers
is a gap that exists between two hands.

This gap connects between the breath
and the lips and the skin.

It extends beyond the unspoken thought
and over the imagined rainbow.

It leaves behind the blinding tears
and the beautiful nights on the balcony.

It laughs in the face of the ring
and the big book that is said to hold all of the answers.

It has a magnetic force that pulls
pushes twists and turns, a kiss.

It has no end. It has no beginning.
It smiles at two lovers making love on the balcony.

It leaves you behind, breathless and foolish
dizzy and simple enough to love.

That distance is the only reason
we love in the first place.

It gives us a reason to desire.
It gives us the excuse to close the gap.
It gives us those beautiful nights on the balcony.
It gives us foolish kisses, simple enough to love.

That distance between two lovers
ceases to exist when two hands touch
and all of those simple kisses
no longer seem so foolish.

Author notes

This is not meant as a physical distance. It is meant to be mental. Even when right next to someone you love, they feel miles away, but you are still connected by that very distance. It gives you both a reason to come back together again, out of love. Even if it seems terribly foolish, it's as simple as a single touch.
