Dark as night
light as day
happy and free
it seems to run,
it's life away.
Legs stretched long
breath coming fast
a graceful bound is made
weightless in air
only to touch earth again.
A break is needed,
energy scarce
a quick rest,
a filling drink,
we're off again.
Wind through mane
legs like lightening.
Faster than the birds
which dare to race
only to lose once again.
Closer to familar land
closer to home
a family awaits
a mare calls,
No longer alone.
Another day begins
as night approaches
coyotes call
for their family
to hunt again.
It protects its kin
thgouh the long night
coyotes hunt
colts shake in fear
reassured by morning light.
Morning comes bringing hope
breakfast of hay served
apples
carrots and grain
are on the menu.
Saddled up
shoes cleaned
bit in place
rider in place
and were off again.
No sun today
only rain
only clouds
only wind
never out long in this weather.
Off on a hunt
rabbit?
bore?
deer?
no, it's fish.
Fish and gather
cut and clean
put in a leather bag
headback through fields
back to the barn.
Colts neigh
mares stomp
horrid smell
wonderful hay
Welcome back home.
