I hear it all start
"You're wrong!" "You're not normal!"
"You're a freak!"
I turn and realize it's not to me they speak
I say nothing. I sink deep into the seat.
Best not to make it worse.
I wait.
I hear a sound. I turn. Seated behind me is a girl,
A handprint on her face.
No one moves. I smile at her. Maybe to calm her down.
She grimaces. Turns away hurt.
Stares out the window. Tears come.
They notice. It gets worse.
"Wazzamatter?" "Aw, shut up!"
She sinks deeper in the seat.
Allows her short hair to fall in her face.
Hit again. More tears.
I stand.
"Knock it off!"
All eyes on me. I sit quickly. Too late.
She looks toward me. Shock on her face. Smiles shyly.
Someone approaches me. I sink lower in the seat.
"What's it to you?" "Mind your business!"
Realization on his face.
"She's one of them."
His hand raises.
I stare into his eyes. Cold grey.
He freezes. Meets my eyes.
I sit tall. His hand falls.
He turns and goes. I turn again.
Beckon her forward.
She's shocked. I'd stood up for her.
She rises. Comes forward. Sits down.
We sit together in silence.
And for once I look forward for tomorrow.
