Breathing Irony

I can see the world today,
A concrete mess that will stay
On the earth until someone
Sees the imprinted shadow
Of the industrial wheel,
An engine that lay in disarray.

I can see the world today,
Tangled in bundles of optic wires,
A technology faster than the enquiring
Neurons that invented a new way to
Transport thoughts without perspire.

We will awaken the idea inside our minds,
That we cannot control our own
Destinies by feeding and breeding
Our own species.
Leaving other animals,
To feast on their own extinction.

Are we the gods over this kingdom?
For if we think we are,
We have chosen to jump off a cliff,
Pedaling a bike without any knowledge
Of aerodynamics,
Wings or a parachute’s lift.

Irony is breathing and killing us.
On a planet that was meant not to see,
The billions of human prints
But that of bees
Pollinating time, continuing the life
Of  plants, animals, and other species.

    So True

Man has left far too much of a detrimental foot print on our poor earth. She can only make up for so much of our destruction!

If "Irony" is a statement that, when taken in context, may actually mean the opposite of what is written literally, then how is it that "Irony is breathing and killing us?" I don't get that part of your poem, which otherwise is very well written and makes a valid point.

    Exceptional Write!

Bravo a thousand times to you.
This poem is one of the best I've read in a long time.
The words were truthful and clear.
    A visionary wrote here.
    Thank you for this.
    Love peace

very dark (but on a bright, earthy background). Nice phrases (like "pollinating time"). Well done.

    Superb Plus +

An incredible write, indeed. You've expressed your thoughts quite well. This also reminds me of one which I recently posted called: "Puddled schemes and Rusted Dreams". Here's a link if you would like to read it: http://allpoetry.com/poem/4983569

  • I really liked the meter and rhyme of this poem. I thought that it was overly pessimistic (in particular the last stanza), but that is probably because I just had a full meal and am warm and comfortable tonight. But you certainly made me think; maybe I am wrong to be so happy with my life and with this world.

    Beautiful.

Great message, I feel the same way about the world sometimes.
I don't understand what happened to all the beauty and the wonder.

I loved the 3rd stanza, how very true.
If only we could teach that to the rest of the world

you are right, if we choose to think we are Gods of this planet we are surely headed south. I loved this write. very creative and flowed nicely.

    Cool

"Sees the imprinted shadow/ of the industrial wheel" I love the imagery. There's a sense of barely suppressed anger in the first few stanzas, that turns into defeat while remembering the beauty of the things that should be- and the sweet unfairness of it all.
This really gives it an umph! to make it a jarring piece.
    Beauteous!
