My body is my canvas,
I am my work of art.
When you look upon me,
You look upon my heart.
The first, when I was eighteen,
My mother bought for me,
And thus was born my love of ink,
Which you can plainly see.
My love of music on my neck
And Shakespeare on my spine
Sure, they get me funny looks,
But I don't really mind.
There are some that do not think it art,
And when they look at me
'Disrespectful' and 'delinquent'
Are what they choose to see.
They don't look at the artwork
To see what's really there,
Which is like judging someone
Based on how they do their hair.
They don't understand the symbols
Of things that got me through hard times,
They just assume that what they see
Is an admission of a crime.
The bible verse on my foot,
Is for a brother long gone,
And the lyrics on my wrist and back
Are from my favorite songs.
My best friend around my ankle,
My beliefs are on my arm,
And what I do to my body,
Does not cause any harm.
They tell me I should "tone it down"
That it is not okay,
And when asked why I do it,
This is what I say;
One day, we all will die
And leave our bodies behind
And when my love ones find me,
I want them to find
My life, the way I lived it.
All of my joy, and strife,
When they look at what I left
They will know who I was in life.
My Body, is my canvas.
I am my work of art.
When they look upon me,
They will look upon my heart.

Good poem. I enjoyed it. I am so sick of people telling me to tone things down. I don't have a tattoo yet, but I don't doubt I'll get one in the future. It just has to be something that means a lot to me - like yours.
I like the ending line and that whole concept - that you have put your heart out for all to see. Thanks for entering.
