The Reticulated Python was his favorite snake of all! Our five-year-old announced his preference after devouring several fascinating library books. Fortunately, the Reptile House at our local zoo had one! Every trip to the zoo for the next two years involved a visit to this particular snake. We even made a special point of attending on the hallmark day the zookeepers brought it out to be measured!
Last week’s mid-winter visit was tragic. Unbeknownst to us, the python had died of old age. After reading the notice in front of his cage, our boy pulled his hood down over his face, and stood, silently sobbing. We ended our outing, and returned to the car.
Trying to cheer him up on the drive home, Mom said that he could choose a special treat. She proceeded to suggest several delicious possibilities.
From the back seat, his three-year-old brother piped up, “I think all the zebras are dead!” (The zebras are his favorite zoo animal.)
“Oh, no, Benji! They’re fine! It’s just too cold for them to come outside.” was Mom’s reassuring reply.
After a moment’s silence, he inquired wistfully, “Don’t I get to pick a treat?”

There's nothing more brilliant than the churning of a 3 year old's mind, is there? Put him to work on the economic crisis - prompto!
I hope they both got treats, and are happier than pigs in slop!

Aww, I hope they both got wonderful treats! Life is inevitable, unpredictable and our reactions can be so revealing- especially those who are young enough not to mask true feelings. Wonderful write, as usual! Best of luck~
