wow, i think this is a piece that could have a lot of different meanings, and could be interpreted in many different ways, depending on how you read it... I liked what one reader suggested about it being a beauty and the beast style poem
For me personally though, and I'm not sure why, it made me think of a girl who, maybe isnt all that pretty of popular, (your damsel in distress) and is fighting to win the heart of her champion, some gorgeously sweet guy,(knight in shining armour) but having to compete for him again some snobby, uber pretty girl (aka.. the beast...Beautiful exterior

I'm not sure if that is what you were going for, but in any case thats how I took it!
