Trapped without a cage

Pity canaries?
Ostriches, penguins and I
are worse;
though land is ours to traverse,
we suffer a greater curse:
we try
to break into the sky,
but our zeal
won’t win the gods’ appeal.
Unheard cries,
“we will never fly!”

    Well this is definately a different interpretation of the prompt, I was getting a little lost until the end tied it together. Best to you in the contest
